2020 DECORATIONS CONTEST

Because of the COVID restrictions this year, it was a challenge for the garden club judges to keep a safe distance in the car with masks on.  We eventually worked it out, driving around Saturday evening, December 19th admiring all the holiday decorations.  We spent 2.5 hours driving through the neighborhood before deciding on our winners.  Thanks to everyone who participated.  We had an overwhelming number of newly decorated homes this year.

TRADITIONAL Bob and Pamela Petrie’s home at 3402 Country Hill Drive provides us with a multi-light display.  Lights are strung along the top of the fence, they outline the roof line, are strung on the trees, bushes, and even their garden.  A beautiful wreath hangs on the yard light.  This traditional form is finished with a creche located at the corner of the house.

INFLATABLES The display of inflatables at Bill and Erin Mattlock’s home at 10111 Spring Lake Terrace tells the story of 2020.  They have presented us with the Covid Edition of Christmas.  You will find lights on the roof line, snowflakes in the windows and projected on the house.  The inflatables of snowmen, Yoda, Santa and many others all adorn their MASKS.  That truly tells the story of this year.

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention 10103 Spring Lake Terrace the home of John Havranek.  The Santa on top of the house shares many of our thoughts.

BEST LIGHTING The Tase family at 9914 Pinehurst has been an in-progress project over the last several years.  They have streamlined their lighting to include the outlining of the windows, the roof, outline of the house, the fence, the shed and the bushes.  Red and white candy canes run along the driveway.  This is a must stop on your drive through the neighborhood.

JUDGES CHOICE We chose John and Sandy Price’s home at 10009 Morningside Court.  The entire house, front, chimney (how did they do that?), sides, back, fences, trees and bushes are all shining brilliantly with colored lights.  An American flag is proudly displayed in the front yard.  The pictures do not do justice to this winner.

Be sure to drive through our neighborhood.  Relax and enjoy all the beauty herein.

Happy Holidays to one and all.

Halloween – virtual 2020

Due to covid and Fairfax City as well as CDC guidelines, CCHCA will not be sponsoring any in-person Halloween events this year. We are very sad that we cannot do our normal pizza party and trick or treat our way home, but we know many families have already made alternative plans.

We have come up with some virtual events instead! We are excited to announce that we will have a Jack O’Lantern carving contest (virtual of course!). There will also be a house decorating contest! Let’s see those Halloween decorations for all our kids (and adults!) to enjoy.  Galleries of the contest entries will be posted on this page and on Facebook.

CCHCA will also sponsor a virtual costume contest! We will have various prizes for the following entries:

  • Scary, age 7-12
  • Scary, age 3-6
  • Friendly, age 7-12
  • Friendly, age 3-6
  • Baby
  • Family

To enter the contests, you can simply post your photos to our Facebook page, or you can email them to Katy Johnson, katynor@aol.com

We know some families are planning to trick or treat, and we ask that you do so in a safe, socially distant manner. Please remind our children that if lights are off on the porch, to not knock on those doors. We hope everyone has a wonderful, safe, and enjoyable Halloween!

Thank you,

CCHCA Board

Beauty Spot – October 2020

Congratulations to our neighbors Jean and Dave Bever at 3408 Park Hill Place! They are the winners of the Country Hills Garden Club Beauty Spot Award for October 2020. The grounds around their CCH ranch-style house feature an enviable landscape that draws compliments throughout the year. A lustrous, green lawn borders the driveway which leads to a medley of shrub shapes in linear planting beds along the house walls. Rhododendron, azalea, euonymus, and laurel bushes next to their compact companion plants of nandina and blue star juniper display reliable color and texture even during Virginia’s grayest, coldest days. For spring and summer seasons, the Bevers add pizzazz to the view with the continuous blooms of annuals and roses and the unique foliage of lamb’s ear and liriope plants.  This month the front yard captures the excitement that comes with the start of autumn and the anticipation of harvest-time holidays. A banner with a bright–eyed owl dressed in Halloween costume leads a parade of seasonal flowers. A pattern of alternating yellow, white, and blue pansies embellished with glossy, orange pumpkins and a glowing yellow chrysanthemum brings movement and rhythm to the scene. This landscape’s lineup of garden favorites guarantees a star-studded grand finale for the growing season.

Happy Autumn!

safety information – Halloween

COVID has complicated everything, including Halloween. Below are some resources that might be helpful.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) published safety guidelines for holiday celebrations.

Follow this link to view a document published by the City that contains the CDC’s guidelines specifically for Halloween.

The Washington Post published an informative article on the subject.

The Fairfax City Police will be hosting a drive-by Halloween treat distribution event. See page 2 of the latest CityScene.

CCHCA has not yet reached a decision on holding a neighborhood event. We hope to make a final decision next week.

Beauty Spot September 2020

Congratulations to Marcie and Chad Sands the recipients of the Country Hills Garden Club Beauty Spot Award for September 2020. Their home at 10100 Spring Lake Terrace rests in a clearing at the edge of the forest that borders the Accotink Creek.  A camera with a wide angle lens is necessary to completely capture the broad landscaped grounds with numerous ornamental bushes and trees and a lawn that extends to a hedgerow shared with the CCH Commons. In the front yard, a Japanese maple in prime form with its dome shape and bronze foliage draws attention as a dramatic contrast to the surrounding green turf and woods. Pyramidal hollies growing at the house corners frame the distinguishing architectural and floral features across the two story facade.  Picture windows with sky blue shutters overlook flowerbeds and containers with profusely blooming yellow and red zinnias, peach gerbera daisies, and pink begonias. Lush liriope plants add texture with spikes of tiny, purple flowers nestled between narrow, lime-striped leaves. The fancy banner near the classic doorway reflects the colors of the beautiful flowers irresistible to birds and butterflies. A quick switch to a zoom setting on the camera just might catch that magic moment when a goldfinch arrives at the scene!

Enjoy the last days of summer!
